Three SANFL clubs could reportedly be set to merge due to financial troubles.

According to Triple M's Ken Cunningham, West Adelaide, Glenelg and South Adelaide have entered into discussions about a possible amalgamation, such are the their financial problems.

"My information tells me, and it's spot on, that three sides within the SANFL...that's Glenelg, West Adelaide and South Adelaide, the communication lines have opened up about the big A. Amalgamation,"ย the former South Australian cricketer, SANFL umpire and current radio broadcaster said.

"There's been talk by those three clubs regarding amalgamation. As we know Westies are in financial trouble, sadly. Glenelg likewise, sadly, and South Adelaide likewise. So the three are struggling financially.

"My mail tells me the communication lines have opened up, and the big A has been thrown around and bandied about.

"What the eventual outcome will be, that's still not in cement yet.

"I don't know whether the SANFL knows about it."

If an amalgamation takes place, it would rock the very foundations of the league, with all three clubs mainstays of the league for many years, with all three founded over 95 years ago.

Glenelg was founded in 1920, West Adelaide in 1892 and South Adelaide in 1876.
