The Essendon Bombers have confirmed their hiring of well-credentialed assistant coach and former player, Mark McVeigh as their next senior coach.
McVeigh played 232 games at the top level, all in Essendon's red sash, before undertaking a coaching apprenticeship that saw him hold roles at GWS and Sydney for well over a decade.
"Spike's appointment to the role means Essendon's commitment to hiring an "Essendon person" for the top job has been fulfilled.

Essendon president and McVeigh's former teammate Andrew Welsh spoke glowingly of his new hire when confirming the acquisition of the current Swans assistant, stating his board was "unanimous and confident in its decision to appoint McVeigh to lead the club's next era".
"We have been extremely clear on the strategy and direction of this football club. We are building the next successful era for Essendon, with a view to playing finals, winning finals and competing for premierships. Mark is the best coach to take us forward to achieve that," Welsh said.
"This industry demands high performance, continual improvement and a relentless drive to get better every day. We went looking for a coach who could establish a clear football identity, develop our people and build a culture that's disciplined and connected from day one.
"Mark was clearly the best candidate for what this role demands. He's developed emerging talent throughout his coaching career, and he connects with younger players in a way that matters for a list at our stage. His game plan is built for the modern game, quick ball movement, adaptable structures, and it's suited to where this competition is heading.
The 45-year-old has signed a three-year contract with the Bombers, concluding at the end of the 2029 season, and outlined his excitement to get started after his appointment.
"It's a privilege to return to Essendon. This club has always held a special place in my heart, and I'm incredibly excited to be back and to help lead the club I love," McVeigh said.
"We're not looking backwards, we're building the next great era of this football club. That's not built on promises. It's built on our standards, our actions and the work we put in every single day.
"There's genuine talent on this list, particularly in the emerging group, but talent alone doesn't get you where you want to go. Our job is high standards, real connection, and total clarity on how we want to play and what it means to pull on the red and black. What excites me is what this group can become together. Our job as coaches is to build an environment that gives them every chance to get there.
"I want us to be brave. Aggressive with the ball, relentless without it, and a defensive system our players trust. When people watch Essendon play, there should be no confusion about what we stand for.
“Pre-season will be demanding. We're establishing our standards from day one, physically, mentally, technically. There'll be a real emphasis on competing hard and building our game model together, so every player knows exactly what's expected of them before a ball is bounced.
“I can't wait to get started," he finished.
Welsh left Bombers faithful with a plea for unity at the end of the announcement, almost in preparation for the divide the failure to hire favourite son James Hird may create.
"We know the last few years have been hard for Essendon people, and we feel that deeply. But I want to be clear: we are not going backwards from here. We have taken the hard path in this process, and we believe it is the right one. This club is resilient, our direction is strong, and I have never been more confident that Essendon's best days are ahead of us. We need to all unite together to ascend back up the AFL ladder," Welsh finished.
The appointment means Fremantle assistant Jaymie Graham, Adelaide assistant Murray Davis and the aforementioned Hird were unsuccessful in their attempts to land the top job at the fallen Victorian powerhouse.
It remains to be seen whether or not McVeigh will see out his coaching duties with the Sydney Swans as they embark upon another finals series, albeit under a cloud of controversy.
