Journalist Damian Barrett has reported on The Footy Show on Wednesday night that Hawthorn are looking into acquiring the services of Gold Coast Suns captain Steven May during the upcoming off-season.

May will be out of contract at season's end but was upgraded to co-captain alongside Tom Lynch at the end of last season, with the Suns reportedly keen to tie up May's future sooner rather than later.

Barrett revealed that the Hawks are looking for a long-term replacement for the likes of defender Josh Gibson, and have tabled an offer to May that looks like quite a substantial one.

"We can tell you tonight that Gold Coast Suns co-captain Steven May is the latest target of the Hawks," Barrett said.

"May is out of contract and there are several offers that his management are waiting through, but the Hawks is one that is a significant one, and one that will take time to digest."

The key defender has made 88 appearances for the Suns since making his debut in round six of Gold Coast's inaugural season back in 2011.
