The Age's Peter Ryan reported on Wednesday via Twitter that Carlton and Richmond forward Dan Butler have "caught up" as the Blues continue their pursuit to recruit a small forward.

Despite spending the majority of the season out of Richmond's senior side, Butler has performed "outstandingly" in the VFL and seems to be an ideal fit for Carlton's forward line.

Butler is believed to be seeking opportunities elsewhere after he has struggled to get back to his 2017 premiership form.

The Blues have also expressed their interest in more small forwards including Jack Martin and Tom Papley.

Butler kicked 30 goals in 23 games in 2017 in a year where Richmond stunned the competition and won the premiership.

The 23-year-old comes out of contract at the end of the season and has only played seven games for the Tigers in 2019.
