Football television has been part of the fabric of the game for almost 70 years.
Shows have sprawled over every night of the week, ranging from prime-time panel slots, breaking news, analysis and comedy. All had their niche, and with that, the interest from the fans.
Trying to rank the greatest football programs of all time is no easy task. Some changed the way the game was discussed. Some entertained generations of supporters.
But who takes the cake as the best of the best?
These are the greatest footy shows ever produced.
4The Sunday Footy Show – Channel 9 - 1992 – Present
On the air for 34+ years and still going strong, The Sunday Footy Show is a pretty simple yet delightful and underrated force to be reckoned with.
Originally airing in 1992 with host Max Walker, Simon O'Donnell and the likes of Ted Whitten, Sam Newman and of course – Lou Richards, the show has had just about anyone who's anyone in football sit on the desk, review the games played so far on the weekend and preview the rest of the round.
Throw in Lou's Handball, the prize packs and the arguments and banter between the panelists and hosts, The Sunday Footy Show is an intuition and currently the longest running footy show of all time – beating the likes of World of Sport and even its prime time spin off on a Thursday night.
Currently hosted by Tony Jones with the likes of Nathan Brown, Damien Barrett, Matthew Lloyd and Rory Sloane as the current panel the show is delightfully old-school just a vital part of any Sunday morning with segments like What Caught my Eye and Media-Ochre being very much a highlight.
Long may it continue.
