Geelong has been dealt a major blow in its quest to defeat the 12-1 Fremantle, with superstar Bailey Smith to miss with illness.

Jack Bowes will come into the line-up, with that the only change for the Cats.

Smith has averaged 32 disposals and five tackles this season and is arguably in All Australian form.

He will be a significant absence for a midfield group which is set to face on of the most settled and dynamic engine rooms in the competition.

Smith was one of Geelong's best last weekend, finishing with 27 disposals and six tackles in a big win over Gold Coast.

Meanwhile, Fremantle regain gun midfielder Caleb Serong as well as Brennan Cox and Matthew Johnson for Oscar McDonald, Corey Wagner and Jaeger O'Meara, who have all been omitted.

O'Meara had 16 disposals and three tackles in his return game from a facial injury which sidelined him for two months, but has bee squeezed out.

Geelong sit third on the table with a 9-5 record, three games behind Fremantle, and the Dockers have a game in hand. A Dockers victory would all but guarantee a top two finish.

Geelong has a bye after this round, with Smith's next game likely to be in Round 17 against Brisbane on July 2.
