The AFL has introduced many new rules over the past few years to help make the game faster and more entertaining for the fans.

While some changes have improved the game, others have made it confusing and matches at times, difficult to watch.

Last weekend, in Round 16, there were numerous instances of confusing free kicks given and it was overall a very bland round of footy.

Because of this, I have decided to list some of the AFL's rules, especially the ones brought in this year, and rank them in three categories: Red light  (needs to go!), green light (yes, can stay) and amber (caution/needs a tweak).

After-the-siren shots on goal

This has recently been a hot debate in the AFL world. Last week Logan Morris kicked what seemed to be a goal after the siren, but it was disallowed after it was ruled he had played on.

Similarly, Hawthorn small forward Nick Watson had a goal disallowed a few weeks ago for also running off his line as he took a kick.

Brisbane coach Chris Fagan weighed in on the matter saying "common sense isn't all that common. Somewhere, there needs to be somebody who is looking closely at common sense at AFL House, bringing that to the game as much as possible".

In my eyes, this rule can be corrected simply by players running in straight and kicking over the man on the mark. Yes players nowadays love to open up the angle with a snap, but after the siren is gone players should just have to stay on their line and run in straight.

Verdict: Amber
