The race to secure the vacant Fremantle AFLW senior coaching position is said to have narrowed significantly, with just two candidates believed to be left in the running.

The Dockers are currently working through the process of finding their third Women's senior coach after sensationally sacking Trent Cooper in November.

That call came after the Dockers recorded just three wins from their 10 games in Season Seven - the first under Cooper where the purple club failed to reach finals.

The ending of the 2020 AFLCA's Coach of the Year's five-year tenure at Cockburn was met with some criciticm, even from Cooper himself.

“I disagree with the decision. I think a lot of people do disagree with the decision. So it's an unpopular decision – doesn't mean it's the wrong decision, time will tell that," Cooper told SEN weeks after his departure from the Dockers.

“I thought I had a lot to offer the group."

Now months into their search for a new senior coach, Fremantle are understood to be left with two remaining candidates, according to The West Australian.

Former Fremantle assistant and player Lisa Webb is seen to be the favoured option among the club's playing group, however family commitments in Victoria place some doubt over her candidacy.

It is understood that the Dockers have approached Webb in regards to the position, however she is yet to decide whether she'll fill the void.

Having departed WA in favour of a move to the Western Bulldogs' women's side as an assistant, where her husband Marc is also a coach with the men's team, Webb has been left to consider moving for the second time after spending months apart prior to her switch to Melbourne's west.

Reports suggest a portion of Fremantle's playing group could walk from the club Webb isn't appointed as their new senior coach.

An unnamed "prominent female football figure in Western Australia" is said to be the other leading candidate for the Dockers job, per The West Australian.

“The interview process is continuing and we're hoping to finalise the process within the next month,” a club spokesperson told the publication.

It is understood that Fremantle interviewed six potential coaches for the job, with four being notified they were unsuccessful.

Details on the eighth AFLW season are yet to be confirmed by the AFL, with season dates and off-season exchange and recruitment periods needing to be finalised.
