Geelong utility Sam De Koning says he relishes playing in multiple positions under Chris Scott, and is well prepared for anything the coach "throws my way".

De Koning secured a premiership in his second year at the Cats as a key defender, but has since battled injury and form, as well as positional moves.

Last year, Scott unveiled the 24-year-old as a more prominent ruckman as the Kardinia Park club searched for its next big man, with Rhys Stanley's body and form failing him at times.

De Koning may well get his chance in the ruck against the Giants this week, as Stanley went down with a hamstring injury.

"I love the challenge of anything Scotty throws my way," De Koning said.

"I just want to be that player who can play in different positions and play well for the team and help the team.

"So if I get the tap on the shoulder and that's in the ruck, I'll put my best foot forward and try and play well for the team.

"We haven't worked through (my role) quite yet. It's early in the week, so we're still not sure what the severity of his injury is, and we'll work through that during the week and see what happens."

The De Koning move into the middle could be helped by the potential return of key defender Jack Henry, as well as Tom Stewart.

"It's been good to see them out there running and working on their bodies and trying to get fit and ready to put their hand up for selection," De Koning said.

"So they look like they're moving well, and I'm not too sure on the timeframes of either of them, but they've been looking good and been happy around the club and supporting the boys."

In Stanley's absence on Saturday, Mark Blicavs stood up against Darcy Cameron and Mason Cox after quarter-time, with the veteran utility someone De Koning looks up to.

"'Blitz' is just the ultimate role model for me," the 24-year-old said.

"Personally, I have taken so much from him and learned so much; what he was able to do on Saturday night was unbelievable.

"I love taking things from his game and how he works for his teammates, and his ability to play everywhere to help the team.

"What he did the other night was very impressive. We are super proud of what he did. He did an amazing job."

Project ruckmen Toby Conway (back) and Mitch Edwards (management) aren't available, with the club not revealing a return timeline.

Defender Lawson Humphries will also miss the GWS clash due to concussion, but small forward Gryan Miers is expected to take his place.
