After 34 past and present Essendon players were found guilty of doping by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, we asked the question on Tuesday, should Jobe Watson be stripped of 2012 Brownlow Medal?

From a total of 2,141 votes, 57% of you said yes, he should lose his Brownlow, while 43% said no.

Jobe Watson poll results

  1. Lol,, The AFL clears all the players, then wada convicts them,, now AFL thinking of taking his Brownlow off him… The AFL is a joke, they should be charged for bringing the game into disrepute.. Their drug policy of 3 strikes your out clearly is out of alignment with Wada..

  2. As a Hawks fan I want Sam Mitchell to win a Brownlow, but not in these circumstances. More importantly, I don’t think Sam or Trent Cotchin would want a Brownlow as a consolation prize. Watson is paying a pretty high price for his drugs charge and will have to live with it for the rest of his life. Stripping his Brownlow is just mean.

  3. I think he should be, just as a gold medal sprinter would be stripped of their medal. But the thought of Trent Cotchin being a Brownlow medalist makes me sick

  4. Its awarded to Fairest & Best player and not the Best Drug Cheat. If he was suspended during the year he would not even be eligible so they should treat this in a similar way and award to the runners up.

    • So you’re saying that anyone can take performance inhancing drugs and win as long as it comes out more than 3 years later that they have cheated then they can keep the medal they cheated to get?

    • Ben Gates the can take his brownlow once they strip ben cousins of his brownlow and premiership medallion.. these boys have been through more shit then anyone in this sport and its all from the management side.. this suspension is likely to push jobe into retirement and i think its fair to say that after being dragged through the mud the last 4 years that enough shit is enough

  5. all AFL clubs use drugs how many times do you see players go off with a injury only to come back a star for the rest of the game and if Watson played for Collingwood you wouldn’t say take his medal off him would you and I don’t even support essendon

  6. So if jobe hands back his Brownlow, does that mean Westcoast hand back their premiership as 5 players admit to taking drugs. Or are illegal drugs ok in sports and a supposed performance enhancer not ok. But lets all forget about teams like Richmond, Geelong, Collingwood who have all had doping and drug issues swept under the carpet and how half those teams have had the same doctor hmmmmm

    • Tammy may I use your comment?. Couldn’t have said it better myself. The worst part for me is actually watching adults laugh at my 10yr old who barracks for the Dons. Who does not understand the finer details of performance enhancing and recreational drugs. Thank you for writing this πŸ’•

    • Recreational drugs usually do the opposite to enhancing performance. Doesn’t make them right. Historically the AFL has been pretty soft on drugs. Not sure why they treated their players so previously when other sports have played handball with their athletes.

    • Josh Thomas & Lachlan Keefe for Collingwood both got banned for 2 years for using a banned substance. So before you shoot your mouth off get your facts straight. Essendon knew what they were doing & were arrogant enough to think they would get away with it. I cant wait for Worksafe Vic to go through the club for duty of care.

  7. It’s a medal for the best and fairest in the competition people have not taken this medal because they were suspended in a season Jobes clearly wasn’t the fairest player in the year he won the award the situation is unfortunate but if he respects the award he would hand it back

  8. All the votes given to the Essendon 34 should be void. So if Watson or Heppell for instance got 3, whoever got the two votes should get 3, and so on. Then tally the votes, because it wasn’t just Watson.

  9. The AFL did nothing about WCE and Ben Cousins, and they were in the real drugs. Some people forget that. The AFL have a lot to answer for, so if Jobe is to lose his so should Cousins. Those who live in glass houses should throw stones.

  10. Jobe Watson has been suspended for the 2016 season not 2012. He is therefore not able to win the 2016 Brownlow medal not the 2012 medal

  11. Does Jobe approve of Tour de France winners and Olympic games medallists being stripped retrospectively after being found guilty of taking illegal substances ?….if you cheat, you gotta cop it sweet !

  12. Funny I cannot remember anyone getting upset like this when Ahmed Saad was suspended for 12 months (he had a sports drink that had an additive that was illegal)

  13. The bombers players signed a release allowing these off site injections, they where told they were pushing the boundaries…….and from what was said today by WADA the players when interviewed kept changing their stories. It’s proven he was using performance enhancing drugs when he won the Brownlowe then he doesn’t deserve it!!!!!!

    • Probably doesn’t,totally tarnishes his reputation ,but would Mitchell want to receive a medal after it is stripped from Jobe ,but your right if you go by the rules he has to be stripped of the medal .

    • Cotchin & Mitchell both wouldn’t accept the Brownlow BUT that doesn’t change the fact that Jobe didn’t win it fairly…..leave the 2012 Brownlow vacant if that’s the case
