Collingwood have identified Port Adelaide assistant Michael Voss as a possible candidate for their vacant head coaching gig.

According to the Herald Sun Collingwood have now formally approached the three-time premiership captain with Voss now expected to be a part of the formal interview process.

Voss has been largely credited for his work at Port Adelaide and has been linked to quite a few head coaching roles in recent times. In 2019 he was heavily fancied for the vacant Blues job before David Teague's immediate impact nudged him out.

Voss coached Brisbane from 2009 to 2013 in a period that ultimately proved rather unsuccessful for the club. Although many accept he would be much better prepared this time.

Former teammate Jonathan Brown said on Fox Footy that he believes Voss had the tools and learnings to be a successful head coach the second time around.

“Yeah absolutely (it makes sense). He’s been very patient, he wants to be a senior coach, Brown said.

“He’s gone back and done a long apprenticeship at Port Adelaide, he’s been there for quite a while. He’s going to come back a better coach for the experience.

“His win-loss record at Brisbane was pretty good, he got a young team to the finals. He’s an inspiration coach (and) he’s a fantastic leader of men. I think he should be first cab off the rank there and would be well and truly in the race.”

Collingwood were recently told by Hawthorn assistant Sam Mitchell that he would not be pursuing the role before he was revealed to be the next Hawthorn coach in-waiting.

It has been reported in recent weeks that Collingwood have made contact with Brad Scott, Mark Williams, Don Pyke and Ross Lyon. Those names join caretaker coach Robert Harvey in the race for the only vacant head coaching role in footy at the moment.

Voss' credentials were endorsed by Ken Hinkley. When speaking about his midfield coach, Hinkley said Voss was “more than ready.”

"He’s been a high-quality assistant for me,” Hinkley said.

“He’s been a great support and help all the way through. I can only wish him all the success and if anyone is looking for a great person and a great coach, Michael Voss would be someone that you should certainly talk to.”
