New Essendon Bombers coach Mark McVeigh has appointed former colleague, premiership ruckman Shane Mumford to his staff.

"Mummy" is McVeigh's first appointment since being handed the reins in late August.

Mumford will join the Bombers in a development coaching role, departing his post as an assistant coach with the GWS Giants' AFLW program at the conclusion of that side's season.

The two men worked together at the Giants previously, with that connection a driving force behind Mumford's acquisition.

Mumford and his family will move back to Victoria, after 15 years in Sydney. Mumford was a memorable part of Sydney's 2012 premiership, and a popular cog in the GWS side that continually challenged at the pointy end of the season across the late 2010s and early 2020s.

The 40-year-old played 216 games across 13 seasons at Geelong, Sydney and Greater Western Sydney, and was named the Giants' best and fairest player in 2014.

Mumford's move continues a period of upheaval at both clubs.

Essendon are looking to re-establish themselves as a powerhouse in the landscape in the coming years, after unravelling in recent times.

GWS are undergoing a list "reset", as outgoing CEO Dave Matthews called it earlier this week, with his and now Mumford's off-field departures adding to those occurring within the playing ranks.

Lachie Whitfield has recently emerged as gettable, after the exits of Toby Greene, Jake Stringer, Jesse Hogan and Kieran Briggs were recently confirmed, too.

Mumford's AFLW Giants currently sit 14th on the ladder, having won one of their six matches to date.
