St Kilda fans can breathe a sigh of relief as coach Ross Lyon put to bed fears of a long-term injury to ruck Rowan Marshall during Friday night's match against Fremantle.

Marshall left the ground late in the game after what appeared to be an injury to his leg, however, Lyon said he was told by the 30-year-old it was a knock to the shin rather than structural damage they think.

"No knee, just into the shin," Lyon said in the post-game press conference.

"That's what (Marshall) told me, but we'll wait till it cools down. I thought (Jack) Higgins was fine the other week but then he wasn't ideal.

"I spoke to him and spoke to his family just for a casual chat and they were like, 'No it's his shin', so I think he will be fine.

"I was never overly concerned. No one has flagged anything."

Key defender Dougal Howard was the other Saint to go down injured, with the veteran hurting his calf. The club will send the 30-year-old for scans to find out the extent of the injury and his timeline to return to play.

A sideshow to the Saints-Dockers game was 120 minutes of constant tussling between Fremantle forward Patrick Voss and star St Kilda defender Callum Wilkie.

Voss (three goals) was sent to perform a defensive shut down assignment on Wilkie after his success in a similar role a fortnight ago against Hawthorn skipper James Sicily.

The pair were scrapping and into each other for the entirety of the match, with Lyon calling some of the actions "bizarre".

"I just thought to be honest, the first 30 seconds was a bit bizarre, really, but I'll leave that," he said.

"There was an umpire right there, but that's okay, we're all big boys and we love a competitive spirit, but I'm not the umpire. It was interesting, some of it early.

"If they don't pay it, it must be within the laws and the spirit of the game, so that's okay.

"I thought Wilkie sort of got to work ... the exits, rebounds, and all that. In the end, I think it became a non-issue. I thought it was a bit of a floor show, but each to their own."
