North Melbourne secured the services of Melbourne small forward Charlie Spargo via free agency on Monday, adding premiership experience to their rebuilding list.

Spargo played 108 games for the Demons in a high forward role as a conduit player, kicking 64 goals over eight seasons, before he opted against re-signing with the club to join cross-town rivals North Melbourne via unrestricted free agency.

While speaking on AFL Trade Radio, the 26-year-old highlighted the restrictions in his role at Melbourne, which played a factor in his decision to leave.

"I feel like at Melbourne I played the small forward role, and it gave me good building blocks, but it was a rigid role, without freedom," Spargo said on Tuesday.

"I spoke to North about playing a role with a bit more freedom. I play my best when playing on instinct."

Spargo admitted his free agency call was a stressful decision for him, but he is glad to join the Arden Street-based outfit.

"Given my last two years with injury and struggling with continuity, my contract situation was stressing me out," Spargo said.

"Towards the end of the year, it kind of picked up with North.

"I spoke with [head of football talent Brady Rawlings] and came to the decision it was best for both parties."

The Demons pocketed an end-of-second-round National Draft selection as compensation for Spargo's departure, which currently resides as Pick 41.
