Former AFL stars Kane Cornes and Robert Murphy spoke on SEN Mornings on Thursday morning about which teams they realistically thought could win the premiership.

Murphy said 12 teams could realistically have a shot at the cup, while Cornes believes the race is a little closer, suggesting only 10 different sides can win.

The former Bulldogs captain - who missed their 2016 triumph due to a knee injury - believes the race for the premiership is as open as it's ever been.

โ€œWinning the AFL premiership used to be like the Melbourne Cup,โ€ Murphy said.

โ€œIt was such a big race with a tough percentage chance to win.

โ€œOn the back of the Bulldogs two years ago and the Tigers last year, I think the landscape has changed.

โ€œThe race is more of a Cox Plate, because more horses in the race think they can win.โ€

With Murphy adding two extra sides to the list, the difference between his list and Cornes' are St Kilda and West Coast.

Despite a number of retirements, Murphy still believes the Eagles are a chance to win their first flag since 2006, while the Saints could realistically claim just their second ever premiership.
