Gold Coast star recruit Izak Rankine is set for an extended stint on the sidelines, following a setback in the young gun's rehabilitation this week.

The 19-year-old originally strained his hamstring against Sydney in the pre-season JLT Series, and will now have to wait a while longer before he can begin his 2019 campaign.

Suns Head Physiotherapist Linsday Bull told the Alpha Sport Injury Update that Rankine is set to remain in rehabilitation and continue his recovery for the next 4-6 weeks.

“Unfortunately Izak suffered a small setback in his rehabilitation,” Bull said.

“We’ll continue to take a really cautious approach with Izak over the next four to six weeks.”

Aaron Young received a knock in last weekend's loss against West Coast, but remains a chance to be fit to play against Melbourne this weekend.

“He’s been a little bit sore early in the week but it’s improving day by day,” Bull said.

“We’ll see how he goes with training this week and he’ll be a test for this weekend.”

In better news for Gold Coast, Suns trio Pearce Hanley, Lachie Weller and Corey Ellis are all expected to make their returns from injury, as the club hopes to notch up their fourth win of the season.

“Lachie’s been training really well over the past couple of weeks and pending training over the next couple of days will be available for the weekend,” Bull said.

“Corey as well should be available for the weekend after getting through training this week too.”
