Defender Lachie Young and midfielder Will Hayes will both make their AFL debuts against Carlton on Sunday at Marvel Stadium.

Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge told both boys in front of the playing group after their main training session, leading into Sunday's match.

Hayes was selected with pick 78 in last year's draft and is known to many around the club due to his long stint with Footscray in the VFL.

Hayes' drafting comes off the back of consistent years of footy and an outstanding year (2018) in the VFL which resulted in him winning the Bulldogs' VFL B&F as well as being in the VFL Team of the Year.

A contested ball-winner who works hard off the stoppages, Hayes averaged 26 touches a game in the VFL, according to the club.

He featured in both pre-season JLT Community Series matches.

Young was taken with pick six in the rookie draft in 2018.

A rebounding defender from Dandenong U18s, the 19-year-old has built a reputation of being a good reader of the play, with strong overhead marking and good kicking skills.

Young has already impressed all those down at the kennel and was rewarded with a one-year contract extension keeping him there till 2020, says the club website.
