Melbourne have released their 2018 away guernsey, as their royal blue jumper makes a return after 30 years out of the game.

The Demons wore the guernseys from 1975-86 for the introduction of colour television, and hasn't been wore since the 1986 season.

The guernsey is one of two clash strips for Melbourne in 2018, with the club's 'red back' guernsey carrying over from last season.

Melbourne Chairman Glen Bartlett was thrilled to bring the guernseys back this year, and is excited to replace the white jumper, hoping fans enjoy this version better.

“I’m very excited about it. I think for some time we’ve known that our members and supporters weren’t that happy about the white jumper,” Bartlett told melbournefc.com.au.

“I’ve had a view – and we’ve had it within the club – that we’d love something different that reflected our colours. It had to be different to our traditional colours, so we’ve come up with this.

“I think it’ll be fantastic, and I really hope our members and supporters really embrace it, because it does have meaning.”

Given Bartlett was around during the time the guernsey's were first worn, the club Chairman says it brings back fond memories of watching some of the club's greatest ever players.

“I’ve still got vivid memories when Robbie Flower wore it, and Brownlow Medal winners Brian Wilson and Peter Moore wore it, and even Mark Jackson, so they’re our colours and connections of the past,” Bartlett added.

“White is an easy default, but it’s not part of our club colours and with our branding a couple of years ago, we got the white out of our logo.

“I don’t think white really excited anyone and we don’t have white in our colours, so I’m rapt, as I think the new clash strip with the white shorts and red socks look fantastic.”

The Demons will wear the royal blue guernseys in a number of matches this season, including away matches against Adelaide, Carlton, Fremantle and Essendon.
