It's the question which is capturing the attention of the footy world following Essendon's sacking of Brad Scott.

Should James Hird return to coach the Bombers?

Hird has a 48-1-49 record at the helm, but oversaw the club's darkest chapter.

Now 53, he put forward his case on Channel 9's Footy Classified earlier this week, asserting he is much better equipped now, having held a director of coaching role at Port Melbourne since the start of last year.

Zero Hanger's editorial team has its say.

The linger and stench of James Hird returning as Essendon coach has lived for over a decade, and on some level, will never dissipate unless he's given another shot at leading the Bombers.

But for the club to move forward, it truly must find a new avenue and enter a new era, with many, many suitable candidates. Hird not being one them.

Essendon must remove Hird from the process, and quickly, otherwise fear missing out on the likes of Ken Hinkley, John Longmire and an array of assistant coaches who are ready for the role.

His lack of experience in the coaches box, despite his obvious football nous displayed on weekly footy shows should play a part into Essendon's consideration, but ultimately a thought not worthy of said consideration.

If Hird wants to be a senior AFL coach, there is no reason why he shouldn't push for other clubs, such as Carlton or Tasmania, or work his way back into the league before making a pitch.
