It's the question which is capturing the attention of the footy world following Essendon's sacking of Brad Scott.

Should James Hird return to coach the Bombers?

Hird has a 48-1-49 record at the helm, but oversaw the club's darkest chapter.

Now 53, he put forward his case on Channel 9's Footy Classified earlier this week, asserting he is much better equipped now, having held a director of coaching role at Port Melbourne since the start of last year.

Zero Hanger's editorial team has its say.

I am unashamedly on board the Hirdy Train. Essendon needs someone to help regain its soul. The Bombers need unity, and they need the disillusioned and bedraggled fans back on board. James Hird is the man.

Hird still has an aura, is a natural born leader and is in a good place, clearly content and confident with his place in the footy ecosystem. I had a good chat to him over the Christmas break. This is a different Hird - completely different to the person engulfed by the dark cloud that was the supplement saga.

We can forgive him for his mistakes and he's done the hard yards at Port Melbourne, a step backwards towards grass roots. They talk very highly of him at Port and there is nowhere to hide at that level if you're not having a crack.

At the same time, he has kept abreast with developments in the modern game. A sharp assistant like Mark McVeigh will help him with that, anyway.

Essendon needs to be daring, it needs a circuit-breaker and I truly believe it needs a Bombers person to regain the club's DNA.

Bring on Hirdy. He deserves a shot at redemption.
