Carlton has placed its faith in injured midfielder David Cuningham, offering the 25-year-old a one-year extension despite missing the entirety of the 2022 season.

The new agreement will tie the routinely hampered Blue to the club until the cessation of the 2023 season.

Cuningham managed just 16 games across the course of his 2020 and 2019 campaigns, with hip, knee and calf complaints restricting the runner to just 41 outings since making his debut in 2016.

Although Bluebaggers have been deprived of Cuningham's skillset, the club holds a belief that the Oakleigh Chargers product is set to attack the pre-season with vigour following his extension periods of rehabilitation.

“Our club believes in its people and we certainly have that feeling towards David as we know what he is capable of achieving in a Carlton guernsey,” Carlton's head of list management Nick Austin proclaimed.

“Clearly he’s had his run of bad luck over the last 18 months, but as frustrating as this season was for him with not being able to play, the silver lining is that he will be fit and ready to go when the squad returns on day one of pre-season.

“The opportunity is there for David to make his mark on this side and we look forward to seeing him work hard to take his chance with both hands.”

Cuningham's tenure at Princes Park commenced after being selected with the 23rd pick of the 2015 National Draft.
