Essendon icon Kevin Sheedy wants to take an AFL game to New Zealand or New Guinea in honour of the ANZACs.
Sheedy was the pioneer for the traditional Anzac Day blockbuster between Essendon and Collingwood in 1995, drawing 90,000 consistently to the MCG, recognising the efforts of those who have served the country, as well as those affected.

But the four-time premiership coach believes the contest shouldn't remain just on Australian waters, extending to "our Allies" who helped protect the country.

"One of the discussed I had, it was very difficult to even get an hour in New Zealand or New Guinea before the Essendon-Collingwood game," Sheedy told Zero Hanger.

"The game got that big in the day, and you've got the march, and then you can't have it after the final siren of the Collingwood game.

"The good thing about it, Richmond and Melbourne are playing the night before. But I still think our Allies in the defence of World War II were New Zealand and New Guinea, I would love to see a game played probably before the Melbourne-Richmond game the day before the 25th.

"That's something we could look at."

The league has brought surrounding fixtures throughout the past decade, with the Anzac Day eve clash between Richmond and Essendon a success since 2015.

New Zealand played host to three games between 2013 and 2015 to commemorate the centenary of the forming of the ANZACs, with St Kilda losing Sydney, Brisbane and Carlton in Wellington.
