What is the AFL Grand Final?

The Grand Final will decide the premiers of the 2022 AFL season, with the Geelong Cats and Sydney Swans set to clash for the premiership trophy.

Following a 22-game home and away season and the opening month of AFL Finals series, Geelong and Sydney are the last two remaining clubs.

Geelong won the minor premiership in a dominant campaign, carrying a 13-game winning streak into the finals before defeating Collingwood and Brisbane in the qualifying and preliminary finals respectively.

The Swans were unbeaten in seven games when they faced Melbourne in the opening week of the finals. John Longmire's side defeated the Demons before progressing to the grand final after a win over Collingwood.

Geelong are seen as the favourites heading into the grand final, however the match is tipped to be a close encounter.

Should the score of both teams be level at the end of the final quarter, both goal umpires will confirm their scores are identical before moving the match into extra time after a six-minute break.

Both teams will then have two three-minute halves, changing ends at the conclusion of the first three-minute half.

Should scores remain level, a further two three-minute halves will be added until a winner is found.
