St Kilda's newest forward, Liam Ryan, has revealed that his strong connection with speedster Brad Hill was a huge factor in luring him to Moorabbin.

The pair have played against each other for the better part of eight seasons, but teamed up during the 2025 Indigenous All Stars clash against Fremantle in February at Optus Stadium.

The return of the marquee clash has brought standalone and exhibition games back in vogue, with the AFL also committing to a State of Origin clash in the same timeslot next year.

But for Ryan, it was how the pair "clicked" during their brief interaction as teammates that led to his wanting to join the Saints.

"Just the connection with the Indigenous boys," Ryan told Saints media.

"NAS, Lance (Collard), and obviously (Brad) Hill. Once we spoke about it, they kind of told me to come over, and make the transition.

"Playing against them was good. You learn a lot from the opposition, and obviously, we (Brad Hill) played All Stars together and just clicked.

"It's going to be fun."

Ryan, who had one more year left on his West Coast deal, was traded alongside a 2027 third-round selection for a 2026 second-round pick.

The 29-year-old has played 125 AFL games since he was drafted in 2017. His experience includes a premiership in his first season, as well as an All-Australian blazer in 2020.

But the high-flying forward has also built his leadership credentials, looking after the likes of Eagles youngsters Tyler Brockman, Malakai Champion and Tyrell Dewar.

"I've learnt from Lewis Jetta, who wrapped his arms around me," Ryan added.

"But coming over here with Hilly, who can look after me too, as well as all the young blokes."

Ryan joins Carlton duo Tom De Koning and Jack Silvagni, as well as Sam Flanders, as new faces to the club.
