GWS are understood to be making a late play for Hawthorn midfielder Jaeger O'Meara, who is contracted until the end of next year.

The Giants have seen their engine room drastically hit this off-season, with duo Tim Taranto and Tanner Bruhn joining Richmond and Geelong respectively, while Jacob Hopper is expected to join Taranto at Punt Road.

GWS have made previously plays for Hawthorn veterans Chad Wingard and Luke Breust, who have been seen as gettable in the past 12 months as the Hawks plan for the future under Sam Mitchell.

Breust has revealed he was one the verge of joining the Giants last year, before opting to remain in the brown and gold before re-signing with the Hawks this year.

Star midfielder Tom Mitchell has also been linked to the exit, with the Brownlow Medal winner seen as a strong chance to join Collingwood this trade period, while veteran forward Jack Gunston is set to join Brisbane in the coming days.

O'Meara's name is the latest to be touted in a potential trade, with News Corp's Marc McGowan reporting the former Sun is on the Giants' radar.

GWS currently hold a rich draft hand for 2022, however that could shift soon as they continue negotiations with Port Adelaide, West Coast and North Melbourne as part of a mammoth trade.

The Giants would receive Pick 1 in the trade while parting with Picks 3 and 12.

The deal would still see the Giants hold Picks 15, 18 and 19 that could be part of a deal for O'Meara, while Pick 21 and a future first-round could head to the Giants should a deal with Richmond for Hopper land soon.

O'Meara has played 143 games AFL games, beginning is career at Gold Coast before landing a trade to Hawthorn at the end of 2016.

The 2022 trade period deadline is scheduled for 7:30pm (AEDT) on Wednesday.
