Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell will make sure star midfielder Will Day has everything he needs to remain in the brown and gold for an extended period of time.
Day is out of contract next year and has quickly become a topic of interest after Adelaide missed out on dual premiership Lion Zac Bailey.
The Crows were prepared to offer a deal worth around $10 million, and after missing out on Bailey's signature, who signed with Brisbane for eight years, they could turn their attention to the Hawks' South Australian.
But not if Mitchell has anything to do with it.
"I hope so," the Hawks coach said in response to signing Day up to a new deal sooner rather than later on The Agenda Setters.
"As much as you guys think I run list management, I certainly don't.
"On the way home, I'll probably be making a call because I did read something about Adelaide and Zac Bailey.
"I'll be making sure that Will Day is well looked after."
Along with Day, Adelaide is set to pivot to star Saint Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera, who the club previously chased.
Like the Hawks gun, Wanganeen-Milera is out of contract at the end of next year, and looms as one of the biggest signatures in the AFL.
The star Saint genuinely considered a move to South Australia, as both clubs pursued his signature before he penned a two-year extension last year worth $4 million.
Wanganeen-Milera was drafted from Glenelg in the SANFL and has links to both the Crows and Port Adelaide.
Wanganeen-Milera is a two-time All-Australian, a Trevor Barker Award winner and has played 103 games for the Saints.
