Hawthorn co-captain James Sicily said if he had his time again, he wouldn't have made a b-line to AFL umpire Hayden Meyer in the final moments of Saturday's preliminary final loss to Brisbane.
Sicily was handed a $10,000 for his emotional and demonstrative display towards Meyer after the senior umpire made a bold - but correct - holding-the-ball decision against the Hawks, which allowed the Lions to steal the win.
The fiery Hawk is understood to have used some questionable language towards Meyer, and says he'll apologise at the first chance he gets.
“If I had my time again, I wouldn't have done it; that sort of stuff is obviously not play on,” he told Channel Seven ahead of the Brownlow Medal count.
“If I see Hayden tonight (Monday), I will make sure I go over and shake his hand and apologise, and if I don't see him, I'll make sure I do it some time next season.”
Sicily said the emotions during the heartbreaking loss got the better of him.
“Yeah, for sure, it did, but I copped my whack, which was rightly deserved, and if I see him I'll make sure I go over and shake his hand and apologise,” he said.
Sicily's teammate and fellow defender Tom Barrass also copped a fine worth $5,000 due to his actions following the final siren towards Meyer.
Hawks coach Sam Mitchell said he's spoken to both of his experienced players, but admitted the umpire made the right call.
"I certainly caught up with those boys and chatted through it,” he said on SEN.
“They'll work through the fines and all the things they have to do at their end but they knew that the emotions got well and truly the better of them at that moment.
“Going towards umpires after games, I don't think, is appropriate either.”
