Hawthorn champion Shaun Burgoyne is hoping to play on past 2020, with the 37-year-old also rumoured to be given a farewell match in the coming weeks.

The 386-game star is hoping to show the club he has what it takes to go around again in 2021, despite expectations that he and fellow veteran Paul Puopolo will hang up the boots this year.

Burgoyne transition into a forward this season, becoming a helpful goal-threat for the struggling Hawks, but with AFL lists set for major reductions heading into next season, Burgoyne may not have a position at the club.

The Hawks also sit in preparation of a rebuild, with their incoming youth turning the attention of coach Alistair Clarkson.

Hawthorn's round 17 clash will be against the Bulldogs at Adelaide Oval, with a potential farewell clash staged in the state where his illustrious career started.
