The GWS Giants have confirmed the departures of assistants Steve Johnson and Amon Buchanan, with the pair seeing their tenures in Sydney's west come to an end.

Johnson joined the Giants from cross-town rivals Sydney for the 2021 season, having recently plied his trade with the Swans for three years.

The Geelong great brought with him almost 300 games of AFL experience, a stint that spanned 16 years with the Cats and Giants, winning three premierships and a Norm Smith Medal with the former.

Buchanan has been a long-serving member of the Giants' strikeforce, having first joined the club as a development coach in 2013.

The former Swan and Lion has held multiple roles across his spell with the club, which has now come to an end.

โ€œWe thank Steve for his significant contribution to our club as a valuable component of our coaching group over the past two years," GWS football boss Jason McCartney said in a club statement.

โ€œWeโ€™re very appreciative that Steve and his family moved to Sydney to initially continue his playing career before transitioning into coaching.

โ€œSteve had been considering a move back to Melbourne for some time, which heโ€™s now pursuing and so we wish Steve, Erin, Archie, Maggie and Annie all the best for the future.

โ€œWe also thank Amon for his commitment and dedication to the club over the past nine years.

"Amon fulfilled a number of important roles in his time at the GIANTS.

โ€œHe was a key part of our coaching set-up as we reached five finals series in six seasons, including the 2019 Grand Final.

โ€œWe wish Amon, Cara, Elke, Marley and Frankie all the best for their next chapter.

โ€œWith new head coach in Adam Kingsley at the helm, weโ€™re looking to finalise our coaching set-up in the coming weeks for 2023 and beyond.โ€

The Giants have welcomed the addition of Robbie Chancellor, who will take on the role of head of development with the club.

Chancellor has previously worked with new GWS coach Adam Kingsley at St Kilda, while also holding roles at Hawthorn, Melbourne and most recently, NAB League side the Western Jets.

"Weโ€™re thrilled to welcome Robbie to the GIANTS family," McCartney said.

โ€œHe has a long-standing relationship with new coach Adam Kingsley and will be a valuable asset to our football program.

โ€œAcross recent months we identified a need to bolster our development program and weโ€™re excited to have someone of the calibre of Robbie to add to this space, alongside our current development coaches.โ€
