The start time of the 2023 Grand Final time is likely to be moved to a later slot, per reports from The Age.

The report states that the AFL is likely to choose a twilight slot, with the final match of the season to kick off at 4:40pm, rather than a widely speculated night event.

Last year's contest between Geelong and Sydney kicked off in the traditional afternoon time slot, after the league experimented with a night Grand Final in the Covid-19 impacted seasons.

The move to a later time is seemingly a move to boost TV ratings of the biggest event in the sport, with 2022's viewership ranking behind both the 2020 and 2021 night Grand Finals.

Despite the "likely" change, fans remain firmly against any change to the time, with a new survey from the AFL Fans Association showing that 73% of fans were in favour of a daytime decider.

"The most recent AFL Fans Association Fans' Survey showed that 73% of fans want a daytime Grand Final starting at 2.30pm," a statement from the AFLFA read.

"Importantly this is not just a Victorian fans preference, it's the preference of
fans across Australia."

A decision is set to be made in the coming weeks, with outgoing CEO Gillon McLachlan to make a recommendation to the AFL Commission.
