Greater Western Sydney have suffered a huge blow, with newly appointed vice-captain Stephen Coniglio ruled out for the next six weeks due to an ankle injury.

Coniglio sustained the injury during the third quarter of the side’s JLT Series match with North Melbourne on Friday night.

“We’re obviously disappointed for Stephen after he put in a really strong pre-season,” GWS Head of Athletic Performance David Joyce said.

“He’ll spend the next two weeks in a protective boot and progress from there.

“We’re confident that with the right treatment he’ll be back on the field in a bit over a month.”

Coniglio will miss at least the first five rounds, with the Giants playing matches against Adelaide, Gold Coast, North Melbourne, Port Adelaide and Sydney.
