In good news for the Giants faithful, emerging ruckman Kieren Briggs will be a part of the club's setup until at least 2024 after putting pen-to-paper on a new two-year deal.

The 22-year-old has had only a few chances to impress the Giants backroom staff, however, has left an impression on them considering the length of the deal that the Pennant Hills product has been given.

Briggs strung together a few games towards the back end of season 2022, appearing in all but one game from Round 19 to Round 23.

Despite his low amount of game time, GWS General Manager of Football Jason McCartney has marked Briggs as an important figure going forward as the club heads into the next phase of their history.

“It’s a great result for us to have Kieren recommitting to the club,” McCartney said to the club's website.

“Kieren was considered one of the best tall prospects in his draft class, and as he continues to develop, we know he has the potential to be an important part of our club going forward.

“He’s done a lot of work this year with ruck coach Shane Mumford and added a few extra games under his belt - we’re excited to see what he can do in the future."

Hailing from Western Sydney, Briggs will be thrilled to be able to stay in such a native setting to continue his AFL career.

The two-metre tall ruck was taken at Pick 34 in the 2018 draft, however has featured heavily in the Giants' VFL setup since his arrival.

Considering the patchy availability of both first-choice ruckman Brayden Preuss and his understudy Matthew Flynn, the 22-year-old should be aiming to get even more games under his belt in 2023 under incoming coach Adam Kingsley.

In saying this, the Giants as a whole are looking at an uphill battle this off-season to keep ahold of a host of their star players.

Star midfielder Tim Taranto is reportedly edging towards a move to Richmond whilst his partner in crime Jacob Hopper is also exploring his options as the aforementioned Kingsley faces a potential exodus before he even settles into his new surroundings.

However, should the current Tigers assistant manage to work some magic and convince their wantaway stars to remain at the club, then the Giants could be able to hopefully rebound quickly from the disappointment of 2022.
