GWS General Manager of Football Jason McCartney has cooled rumours that former Essendon coach James Hird will be returning to coach the Giants.
Speaking to Triple M on Monday, McCartney discussed Hird's current role with the club, explaining he's not fully involved with the Giants as is, and the idea that he'd return full time is not heavily anticipated.
“James in his leadership role has been doing some great work with the boys, but it is very much part-time,” McCartney said.
“He’s at the club occasionally.
“At the moment he’s in Europe with business interests, so you would really wonder why you would want to jump back into this stuff."
McCartney also discussed the Giants' recent results and acknowledged the team's inconsistent performances. Despite the recent losses, the GWS football boss remains adamant that the club holds faith in the squad and feels it's only a matter of time before they bounce back to their best.
“There’s plenty to work with. We are acutely aware that there are some things we have got to get better at,” he said.
“Anyone out there would look and back themselves in to come in and do some really good things pretty quickly with this group.
“It’s not something that we think is going to take four or five years.
“There are some high quality established players and good young talent coming through.”
Hird's unlikely return to coach further shortens the field of potential candidates, with Nathan Buckley and Ross Lyon seemingly opting out of the race over the weekend.
Former Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson remains a frontrunner for the Giants, while assistant coaches Adem Yze and Don Pyke could also be in contention.
Sunday's loss to Carlton was Leon Cameron's final match in charge of the New South Wales club, with the Giants now set to be led by assistant Mark McVeigh - who may also be in the race - as the caretaker coach.
