AFL legends Garry Lyon and Tim Watson believe St Kilda have the two recruits of the year, although their player of their choices varies.

Watson believes that Zak Jones is the best piece of business in the trade period based on the value of draft pick the Saints sent over (pick 32).

“Is Zak Jones possibly the recruit of the year? His improvement all round … he’s career high and elite levels in all the important components of being a midfielder,” Watson told SEN Breakfast

Meanwhile, Lyon threw his support to Dan Butler, who made the move to St Kilda from Richmond for pick 56, while also acknowledging how well Jones is playing.

“He’s a lot better than we probably gave him credit for. I think he’s got a teammate that probably has his nose in front as recruit of the year though in Dan Butler,” Lyon told SEN Breakfast.

“(Jones) has been great and this is why when I hear people say the draft is the only way to rebuild your club, you’ve also got to pick the eyes out of the talent on other lists.

“They’ve got probably two All-Australian contenders in Dan Butler, who they got for next to nothing, and Zak Jones, what about that for recruiting?”
