Fremantle is hopeful star on-baller Hayden Young will be available for the top of the table clash against Sydney on Thursday.

Young has "dodged a bullet" after suffering a groin injury in the loss to GWS, with scans clearing him of any serious damage.

Dockers coach Justin Longmuir said the classy left-footer will be pushing for the mouth-watering contest at Optus Stadium, but given the five-day turnaround, he is in some doubt.

"He's good. He had a really good scan result," Longmuir told Fox Footy.

"We're on a five-day break so he'll be pushing it for this week, but we've probably dodged a bullet in some sense.

"If he doesn't get up for this week, we think he'll be a really good chance for next week."

Longmuir was quizzed over whether the decision to take Young to Canberra to face the Giants was the right call given his long history of soft-tissue injuries.

"No, there wasn't," he said.

"The five-day break would've been a different story, but he's missed so much footy and since he's been back, he's had some really long breaks. We had a bye after his first game, and then a long break between the Geelong and Gold Coast games.

"We need to get some continuity for Youngy, and build his body, and the best way to do that is playing him. It's not just about Youngy, it's about building synergy with his teammates as well.

"We just got to strike the balance with him for the rest of the season."
