Impending free agent Hugh McCluggage has reportedly received a compelling offer to turn his back on rival interest to instead remain a Lion beyond the end of the 2024 season.

Brought north to the River City with the third pick of the 2016 AFL Draft, the Victorian native has become a mainstay in Chris Fagan's side, making one of the Gabba's wings his own.

With 161 games to his name across his seven campaigns and change in maroon, blue and gold, McCluggage is on the verge of meeting the markers of restricted free agency at season's end.

But while the Victorian is certain to draw rich offers for clubs in his home state, Callum Twomey of AFL Media has reported that Brisbane has tabled a six-year deal to its vice captain to keep him in the Sunshine State.

In the unlikely event of McCluggage knocking back the Lions' deal that would tie him to the club until the end of 2030, Brisbane would still reserve the right to match any offer put forward to the South Warnambool product.

McCluggage has averaged north of 21 disposals per game during his senior career, also producing just shy of three clearances per outing, too.

The gun midfielder and his Lions will earn their next opportunity to arrest their early-season decline when they play host to local rivals Gold Coast at the Gabba next Sunday night.
