Round five was filled with exciting and tense footy all around the WAFL scene.

The Demons finally bought up their first win of the season, while Peel Thunder overcame a slow start to hand Swan Districts a hiding in Mandurah.

West Perth won their first game at the WACA since 1992 despite a late East Fremantle rally, and Claremont snatched a big come-from-behind win against East Perth.

Here is a short look at the past weekend of WAFL action.

PEEL THUNDER VS SWAN DISTRICTS (118-56)

Peel Thunder made it two wins in a row with a 62-point thrashing of Swan Districts despite starting two goals down at quarter time, and plenty of Dockers listed players made it their day.

Dockers duo Liam Henry (26 disposals) and Karl Worner (23 disposals) had key roles in midfield and inspired the team to romp home to a strong victory.

Peel skipper Ben Hancock led from the front with 33 disposals while up forward Sam Sturt may have only kicked a single goal but his seven marks from half forward shows he is one on the Dockers' radar.

Jesse Turner's early season form can't be denied despite the loss, he amassed 33 possessions and Jackson McLachlan in only his third league game proved he is a star of the future with 28 touches.

EAST FREMANTLE VS WEST PERTH [57-72]

West Perth had not tasted victory at the WACA since 1992 but broke the hoodoo in a tense 15-point win over a determined East Fremantle to steer the Falcons back into the five.

Simpson medallist Luke Meadows steered the Falcons home in a fast last quarter finish to complete a great day with 24 touches, six marks and two goals, supported by an in-form Shane Nelson who amassed 27 touches but showed his prowess at ground level with seven tackles.

East Fremantle's forwards were inconsistent inside 50 but Cody Leggett showed them how with three goals including a big bomb from long range to bring the Sharks back into the game. Cameron Eardley's 22 touches were commendable along with his six marks.

Jonathon Marsh also shifted up the ground to combat the Falcons on ball presence and his 19 touches were a positive in what was a tough loss for East Fremantle.

CLAREMONT VS EAST PERTH (91-84)

They were five goals down at quarter time but the Tigers refused to back down, clawing back slowly but surely to break East Perth hearts by seven points in an amazing victory.

Dual Sandover medallist Jye Bolton started in defence but moved into the midfield after half-time and ended with 32 disposals in another outstanding performance by one of the WAFL's great statesmen.

Anthony Treacy didn't have as much of the footy as Jye, only with 18 touches, but his decision-making and goal sense was crucial in the second half comeback for the Tigers, delivering opportunities for 2021 Sandover medallist Bailey Rogers who kicked three goals.

Most of East Perth's midfield were well held in the second half but the leading Royal was Tom North who has started the season brilliantly with 35 touches, four marks and four tackles. Angus Schumacher's 22 touches were strong early and his goal sense was brilliant in the first half, contributing five inside 50s.

WEST COAST EAGLES VS PERTH [27-124]

After four humiliating losses, Perth got on the board for season 2023 with a 97-point thrashing of the West Coast Eagles at Lathlain Park.

It was a day for the forwards who flooded the scoreboard on Saturday afternoon led by the returning Jaiden Hunter who played his first game in two years, kicking four goals in tandem with another solid forward in Harry Quartermaine joining the party with four of his own.

Charlie Thompson was a star in midfield, another 29 touches gave fans another positive impression on his potential as a star in the WAFL. Meanwhile, Jack Cooley (32 possessions), Jack Avery (33 possessions, 12 marks) and Regan Clarke (33 possessions) were all outstanding in midfield for the Demons.

Joshua Browne was one of only few positives for the West Coast Eagles with a 36-disposal game, supported in the rotation by Ethan Hansen who had 29 touches and nine marks at the centre of the ground.

SUBIACO VS SOUTH FREMANTLE [52-40]

Subiaco continue to ride the wave of Momentum early in the 2023 season after a hard-fought 12-point win over a flat South Fremantle at Leederville Oval to move back into the top two.

The game belonged to Kalgoorlie-born forward Ryan Borchet who booted three goals for Subiaco after controlling the first half and catching fire in the third quarter, supported by Ben Sokol who had a quiet outing only having five kicks but contributing two vital goals.

The Bulldogs whittled away a 17-point deficit at three-quarter-time thanks to a fine performance in midfield by Chad Pearson, who shifted up the ground in the last term and would amass 28 touches and eight Marks. However, the Bulldogs didn't have an open forward line despite Jordan Gallucci kicking three goals from 11 kicks.

Former Essendon and Fremantle ruckman Zac Clarke again proved to be unstoppable in the ruck with 38 hit-outs, providing first use of the ball for the Hickmotts who had 56 disposals between them.
