Former AFL coach Terry Wallace says he holds some slight concerns for Melbourne's leaky defence.

The Demons fell short by two points to St.Kilda last weekend, and conceded 119 points to the competition's third-lowest scoring side.

The season-ending injury to prized recruit, former Crows defender Jake Lever in Round 11 and Tom McDonald being positioned mainly as a forward has coincided with Melbourne "leaking" 327 points collectively in their past three outings, and Wallace says Simon Goodwin needs to plug the leak, and fix things back there.

“The goals (kicked by St Kilda) and the (Saints’) ability to take the ball from one end of the ground to the other last week was too easy,” Wallace said on SEN’s The Match Committee on Thursday.

“Therefore, the midfield have got to play their part, the defensive aspects of the forward line have got to play their part, but to me the backline looks very, very vulnerable.

“I couldn’t go in again with (Joel) Smith, Oscar McDonald and (Harrison) Petty all in the one backline.

“I’m expecting some change to the look of that (defensive) line-up and how, when they were getting leaked so badly, they didn’t use Tom McDonald at some stage up the ground.

“Even if as a defensive wingman. That suggests to me he’s playing sore.

"It will be fascinating to see how they structure it up because it was just too inexperienced and when it leaked on the weekend, it really leaked badly.”

Melbourne has made four changes leading up to their match with Fremantle in Darwin. They've dropped Harrison Petty, Mitch Hannan, Sam Weideman and Dom Tyson, while recalling Sam Frost, Charlie Spargo, Billy Stretch and Jeff Garlett.
