Brisbane has started the year slow once again, and the loss to Fremantle by 25 points on the weekend has plummeted the Lions to ninth on the ladder.
Speaking on the Six Points AFL podcast, Mark Stevens believes Chris Fagan needs to swing the axe, making a statement at the selection table.
"Chris Fagan has never dropped anyone, has he? Which is warm, cuddly grandpa Fagan, which is fair enough, and it's worked, I mean, you can't disagree with that. I'm a bit flat because I picked the Lions; I expected a bounce," Stevens said.
"But does Fagan pull the trigger on somebody? Well, I'm looking at Cam Rayner, I just think as a number one pick overall, an extremely disappointing player, this is overall, he's had some huge moments, but if you look at the numbers and pick away.
"I mean he's been involved in premierships, he's been good in big moments, but as a number one pick, you want generational players, he's not that, and he's been flopping, he'e been fined for staging, he's a bit flat and down on form not doing enough, not getting his hands on the footy, he has to be under the gun.
"Fletcher's the other one, who looks out of sorts in his role, so I'm going to pull the trigger on Rayner. I don't think Fagan will do it; it's just not his style, but he must be close to losing patience.
"McCluggage doesn't look right, Dunkley gets pumped up, terrific guy, great leader, have a look at Dunkley's figures this year, they're not great, he has a good run in the media, which is rightly so, but he's down as well.
"It's starting to unwind a bit at Brisbane, I think he might have to pull the trigger on somebody."
Daniel Harford believes the Lions' biggest issue is in the middle of the ground.
"I think their big problem is between the arcs at the moment, pressure between the arcs, intensity between the arcs," Harford said.
"They'll get some moments forward of the footy, they got some brilliant players forward of the footy, individual excellence behind the ball, sometimes saves them as well, it's not necessarily a system that saves them at the moment.
"In the middle of the ground, certainly defensively in transition, they're losing their way big time, and there doesn't seem to be that real fire in the Brisbane Lions at the moment.
"That's what I see, I don't know what Chris Fagan sees at the moment, that's what I see when I watch the Brisbane Lions play, and they are being absolutely torched by teams who are willing to work both ways in the middle of the ground."
