Former Brisbane Lions player Albert Proud is in custody after being charged with the attempted murder of his girlfriend.

The 27-year-old played 29 games for the Lions from 2007 to 2010 after being selected with pick No. 22 in the 2006 National Draft.

The charges are believed to be related to events that took place in the early hours of Sunday morning.

He has also been charged with acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm and wilful damage and he did not apply for bail.

Proud was sacked by the Lions in 2011 after he was convicted of assaulting a Police officer in January of that year.

He was jailed in 2014 after driving down the wrong side of the road of an inner-Brisbane street to avoid Police and later recorded a blood alcohol reading of more than two times the legal limit.
