Former Adelaide forward turned Williamstown recruit Lachlan Gollant has been offered a lengthy suspension by the VFL's Match Review Panel following a dangerous tackle over the weekend.

The incident in question occurred in the second term of Saturday's match between Williamstown and Southport, with Gollant tackling Sharks player Zach Molloy shortly as the latter rushed the ball over the boundary line.

The momentum of the tackle saw Molloy's head land near the fence at DSV Stadium, with the Sharks player left on the ground for some time before rising to his feet and being assisted from the field.

Molloy didn't return to the match following the tackle and has since entered concussion protocols, which place him out of action for at least 21 days.

The league's MRP has since charged Gollant with rough conduct, grading the tackle as careless conduct, severe impact and high contact.

The assessment has meant Gollant has been hit with a suspension of at least four matches, with the Seagulls forward able to accept a four-game suspension or challenge the charge at the Tribunal.

The base sanction would mean Gollant faces six weeks on the sidelines, with the Seagulls scheduled for byes in Rounds 7 and 12. Between those breaks, Williamstown are set to face Footscray, Carlton, Geelong and Brisbane.

St Kilda and Sandringham youngster Alix Tauru faced a similar fate last week after a failed VFL Tribunal challenge, however the AFL has since allowed the teenager to serve his suspension during the club's pair of mid-season byes.

A decision from Williamstown as to whether they contest the charge handed to Gollant will be made by Tuesday.

Gollant has played two games for the Seagulls, making his debut in Round 5 against Werribee, where he kicked four goals in a loss, before managing one major from eight disposals in the three-point victory over the Sharks.
