Andrew McGrath will remain a Bomber until at least the end of the 2020 season after signing a two-year contract extension with the club.

Essendon and McGrath seemed to be on different pages at times over conditions in the new deal, although McGrath told the club's website he never considered leaving.

“My intentions were always to stay at Essendon, and to now announce that officially is something I am proud of,” McGrath told essendonfc.com.au.

"I want to help lead the young boys, and show them the ropes first and foremost. I always want to get better every year I play, and that will be no different this season, so hopefully I can build on my game and take it to the next level.

“I believe we are building something really special here. We have a lot of young talent and experience on our list, we are really driving to achieve the ultimate success."

McGrath was selected with the first pick in the 2016 AFL Draft, and played 21 games in his debut season with the Bombers, and won the AFL Rising Star award, while also being named the AFLPA's Best First Year Player.

Essendon coach, John Worsfold, said the club were thrilled to have agreed an extension with McGrath, and is looking forward to unleashing the young gun in the midfield over the coming seasons.

"We're pleased Andrew has committed to the Club for the next two seasons, and will be a part of the elite culture we are building," Worsfold told the club's website.

"At only 19, the leadership Andrew displays both on and off the field is impressive, and shows he's fully invested in the Club’s vision"

“His performances in defence last season made him an integral part of our side, and with continued development over coming seasons he is on his way to becoming a handy inclusion to our midfield group.”
