After Essendon secured its first win in 18 games last weekend, it's president Andrew Welsh has demonstrated how to keep the fire roaring while performing a citizen's arrest in Gold Coast.

Welsh rushed to the scene after a white Ford Ranger ute ran through a nearby bus stop on Friday night.

The driver then left the vehicle and attempted to escape the scene, but not before Welsh put his 162 AFL games to use and tackled the alleged offender and pinned him to the ground with a fellow bystander.

The incident occurred at around 7:30pm in Surf Parade near Charles Avenue in Broadbeach when Welsh was dining with Essendon CEO Tim Roberts and club sponsors.

Seven News reported the incident on Saturday.

“We saw people running over to the bus stop,” a witness told News Corp.

“There were two people who performed a citizen's arrest and had their knees on his back.

“It was an extremely chaotic scene but the police arrived within minutes.

“How no one was in the path of the ute blows my mind.”

The driver was handcuffed, placed in the back of a police van, and treated by paramedics.

Welsh is not alone as a former player to make a citizen's arrest, with Carlton coach Michael Voss performing a similar act back in 2024.

Welsh and Roberts are in Gold Coast for the Bombers clash with the Suns on Saturday afternoon at People First Stadium.
