Essendon have confirmed that Jake Stringer will miss Round 1, as the Bomber continues to deal with a hamstring strain suffered prior to the club's practice match against Gold Coast.

Stringer managed 15 games last year as he continued to battle ongoing injury issues, booting 25 goals throughout the season.

The 28-year-old didn't feature in Essendon's match simulation or official practice match due to the strain this pre-season, with the club taking a cautious approach regarding his Round 1 selection.

General Manager of Performance Daniel McPherson said to club media that the Bombers were taking a long-term approach to Stringer's fitness.

“Our performance team have put together a comprehensive plan with Jake to get him back to his best post injury. He participated in a strong session on Saturday, and we want to make sure he has block of full training with the main group before he is available for selection,” McPherson said.

“It's a long season ahead and we want to ensure Jake is fully ready to go when he returns to play, so we won't be rushing him back.”

Elsewhere at the club, Matt Guelfi and Kyle Langford got through the VFL unscathed to prove their fitness for Essendon's season opener, with the duo looking impressive throughout the match.

Dyson Heppell remains a chance for selection after progressing well from a foot injury, while Jye Caldwell also remains a chance after spraining his ankle in the club's practice match. The two will be assessed for selection this week.

Essendon's season will get underway against Hawthorn on Sunday, March 19 at the MCG.
