Essendon caretaker Dean Solomon has opted not to pursue the vacant senior coaching position.
Solomon struggled for wins since taking over from Brad Scott in May, claiming one victory against GWS among a host of disappointing defeats.
It is not a surprising development given the performances in the past two months.
It leaves James Hird, Mark McVeigh, Jaymie Graham and Murray Davis in the running for the position.
“I've been incredibly grateful for the opportunity to give back to the football club that has given me so much,” Solomon said.
"I'm proud of this playing group. While the results haven't reflected where we want to be, I've seen the growth of these players every day, and I honestly believe our members and supporters have every reason to be excited about what's ahead. They're made of the right stuff which gives us great hope for the future.
“Get behind them from day one in 2027 and give them the best Essendon support possible. There's nothing better than running out in front of the red and black faithful."
Despite Solomon opting not to pursue the position, he declared in June that he'd remain at the club, seeing out his contract for next year.
"I'm contracted until next year, so whether I'm filling water bottles at half-time or I'm (an) assistant coach, or whatever, I'm here," Solomon said after the loss to the Roos.
"I love this footy club, it's a great football club, and we're in the swamp right now. It's been a tough period of time for a long period of time, but I want to be in here rolling my sleeves up to help this football club, and whatever that is, I'll play my role within that."
Essendon chief executive Tim Roberts acknowledged the contribution of Solomon during the tumultuous time.
“Anyone who has worked with 'Solly' understands the person he is,” Roberts said.
“His leadership, integrity and care for our players have been outstanding, and we are incredibly grateful for the way he has led our football program through an important period.
“He has served this club with distinction as our senior coach and has made a lasting impact on the players and staff around him.”
