Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir won't stress himself with the ruck conundrum just yet, but alluded to the tough calls he will need to make in the coming weeks.

Mason Cox returned to the senior side in strong fashion after the Dockers opted to manage Sean Darcy off a five-day break, helping Luke Jackson take down Brodie Grundy.

Cox had played nine games in the purple, but Thursday's performance against the Swans, in the 38-point win, was arguably his best for the club.

The premiership Pie recorded 10 touches, six marks, two clearances and one goal, playing second banana to Jackson.

"I thought it was the best he's marked the footy, and I thought his ruck work was strong," Longmuir said.

"'Jacko' (Luke Jackson) and (Brodie) Grundy were having a real good battle, and he came on and had a real impact when he came on. It was probably his best game for the club.

"Everyone really needs to earn their spot on the side, don't they? So we've got competition for spots, not just in the ruck; we've got competition for spots all over the ground.

"He got his opportunity tonight and came on and performed his role. So it's healthy competition for spots. It keeps everyone on edge and prepared really well.

"Our rucks are probably a bit the same."

The ruck dilemma at Cockburn has been a consistent conversation throughout the year, despite Darcy's injury sidelining him for the first half of the season.

Longmuir confirmed that if Darcy had had a longer break, instead of the short turnaround, he would've been selected over Cox.

The Dockers put themselves two games clear on top of the ladder following the victory, and will turn their attention to Port Adelaide in South Australia next Saturday.
