Key defender Sam Frost is hopeful he will be able to continue his AFL career 12 months on from a career-best season at the Hawthorn Hawks despite the club recently axing the 32-year-old.

Frost featured at AFL level just twice in 2025, with the Hawks prioritising star recruits Josh Battle and Tom Barrass as the prominent figures in their back six. It comes just one year after Frost played in a career-high 24 AFL matches in 2024, missing just one game that season.

Speaking on AFL Trade Radio, Frost admitted he is yet to be in contact with any clubs about the possibility of playing on in 2026 but highlighted his physical capability to go again next year.

"I haven't spoken to [a club] yet," Frost said on Tuesday.

"I do physically feel I could play another couple of years. My body is not what challenged me this year; it was more than mental and emotional challenge of not being in the team. That's what made this year hard.

"If the right opportunity came up, I'm sure I could play. It was only 12 months ago I was playing the best footy of my career.

"Having no opportunities in front of me, it's impossible to know how I'll feel until one comes."

Several rivals have been in the market for a key defender this off-season, including the Western Bulldogs and Collingwood Magpies, who both fell short in their pursuit of fresh St Kilda signing Jack Silvagni.

Sydney and St Kilda both pursed him last October, but the 32-year-old opted to remain at Hawthorn for the final year of his contract.
