Hawthorn great Shane Crawford believes the Gold Coast Suns are closer to a premiership than the GWS Giants.

Speaking on Channel 9, the Hawthorn premiership star didn't hold back in his criticism of the Giants.

Crawford took aim at the handouts given to the club and their inability to turn them into premiership success.

"They've got such a huge handout from the AFL over a long, long time. I think the time has run out, I think they're going to be a middle of the road team for the next few years," Crawford said.

The 305-gamer also put a line through the Giants 2020 finals hopes.

"They won't play finals, they have some tough games coming up. I think they're pretty much out of the equation."

Crawford believes the Suns have what it takes to reach the ultimate glory before GWS, saying that Gold Coast's list is full of promise.

"They've (GWS) almost closed that window on a premiership, something is missing. Mentally, do they still have some scars from last years Grand Final?

"I think right now, Gold Coast with all their youngsters coming through and they way they team up together. I think they're ahead of the Giants to win a premiership."

The Giants currently sit 11th on the ladder with a record of 6-6.
