Sydney and Essendon are both challenging their fifth offence of umpire contact sanctions.

Matthew Roberts and Angus Clarke were both cited for careless contact with an umpire which brings both clubs to five offences, giving the league the discretion to fine each club.

Roberts' teammates Isaac Heeney and Errol Gulden and Clarke's teammate, Sullivan Robey, were also charged with careless contact with an umpire, but their sanctions have been accepted.

The clubs will learn the outcomes of the challenges on Wednesday.

Last month, Gold Coast was fined $20,000 for its fifth offence for careless contact with an umpire.

"This season we have continued to observe a high number of umpire contact incidents across the league. Amongst these instances of umpire contact, a number have resulted in significant injuries to the affected umpires," footy boss Greg Swann said in a statement at the time.

"This is a trend in the game which we do not want to see continue. Clubs and players have a responsibility to ensure the number of instances of avoidable contact with umpires are reduced."

Brisbane's Jarrod Berry and Geelong's Tom Atkins accepted their umpire contact charges from the weekend.
