Carlton have opted to lock down star draftee Paddy Dow, re-signing him to a contract extension through to the end of the 2022 season.

The contract outlines a three-year extension, which will be tacked onto his already-signed two-year rookie deal, effectively anchoring him down for five years.

Dow was taken by Carlton with the number three pick in the 2017 AFL Draft and has shown promising signs throughout his first AFLX campaign and the JLT Community Series.

The 18-year-old midfielder said he's turning his attention to earning a spot in the side and being a key contributor to Carlton's success.

"I want to go out there and keep earning the respect of my teammates and keep improving as a midfielder, learning from the likes of Marc Murphy and Patrick Cripps," Dow told carltonfc.com.au.

Dow's recent performance seems to have left an impression on the football club and a round one debut versus Richmond could be a possibility.

"We are really pleased Paddy can see the path we're on as an exciting team on the rise," Carlton senior coach Brendon Bolton told carltonfc.com.au.

"We think we've found a really solid player who we hope will have a long career at the Carlton Football Club."
